Ahh
New York, New York... The shot (to the head) heard round
the world. Roger Clemens normally has pinpoint accuracy
and he didn't (or did he) in an interleague game when his
Yankees faced off against their New York counterparts, the
Mets. Clemens beaned Mets catcher Mike Piazza in the head
with a fastball. The injury resulted in Piazza missing the
All-Star Game. Appearantly Piazza did not think the incident
was an accident and even hinted strongly that Clemens (who
does not bat because he pitches in the American League)
was a coward.
In
another game later on Piazza shattered his bat as he hit
a Clemens pitch. Clemens picked up part of the shattered
bat and threw it towards the first base side out of play.
Coincidentally (or not) Piazza was running to first and
the bat came within striking distance. Piazza turned towards
Clemens and started walking towards him, Clemens likewise
then began to walk towards Piazza. Both benches cleared
and the umpires jumped in to restore order. |
