Colorado Avalanche vs Detroit Red Wings

These two hockey teams were playing against each other at a Western Conference final. The Avalanche's Claude Lemieux blindsided the Red Wings Kris Draper with a check and sent him face first into the boards. The force of that check displaced several of Kris's teeth, fractured his cheekbone, jaw and nose, and gave him a cut that needed 30 stitches. Kris later said that Claude did what he did on purpose “because that’s the kind of player he is and we all know that.” During the team’s first game the following season, Kris’s friend and team mate Darren McCarty started to fight with Claude throwing punches in retaliation for the hit on Draper. This gave way to a huge brawl on ice between the two teams and words in the press following the incident.
