Muhammad Ali vs George Foreman
The Rumble in the Jungle took place on October 30, 1974 between Ali and Foreman. This fight coined the boxing phrase ‘rope-a-dope’. This was a strategy by Ali to lean on the ropes and let Foreman punch him hoping to drain the larger man’s energy for the later rounds. During the match Ali would taunt Foreman to throw more punches and to throw harder punches. Ali won in the eight round when he knocked out Foreman, but the knockout was controversial as Foreman was on his feet by the count of 9 but the referee had signaled that he counted to ten. After the fight Foreman suggested that Ali’s trainers had loosened the ropes to benefit Ali. He also suggested that his own corner may have drugged him and he could taste something medicinal in his water.
