Britney and Christina were both part of the Mickey Mouse Club tv show as kids and their success continued as they both released their first albums about the same time. Fans of Christina and Britney battled each other online and the tabloids fed on that frenzy and rumors of a feud were rampant. In 2003 Christina went on tour with Justin Timberlake who Britney had been dating until a much publicized breakup. There were rumors that Christina and Justin hooked up but nothing was ever confirmed. Things heated up even more during the 2003 MTV Video Music Awards when the infamous performance of Madonna/Christina/Britney took place. Madonna and Britney kissed onstage to a shocked audience. The tv cameras then focused on Timberlake to see his response while Christina proceeded to kiss Madonna. The tabloids were on fire the next day as they spewed out rumors that Christina was angry and jealous that her kiss with Madonna took a backseat while everyone was focused on Britney's kiss. In an interview Christina criticized Britney for trying to portray an innocent/virgin image while at the same time using her sex appeal and sexuality to increase her popularity.

There were reports in tabloids that said Christina alledgedly stated that Britney had "let herself go" and she didn't think Britney could ever make a comeback. After Britney married K-Fed, Christina in an interview alledgedly said that she didn't know who Britney was anymore and that Britney was acting like trailer trash.

But alas all is well that ends well... time heals all and Christina bought a $570 bag for Britney's new baby son and this signaled to the media that the feud was over.
