Rosie O’Donnell was co-host
on The View for less than a year, but her outspokenness gave the
show high ratings. Throughout the season Rosie and Elisabeth got
into tame debates about their political views. Rosie was a strong
liberal and Elisabeth was a strong conservative. One day on air,
Rosie called Elisabeth out for not defending her when media speculated
that on a previous debate, Rosie called American troops “terrorists.”
Rosie called Elisabeth “cowardly” when she didn’t
answer a question about Republican pundits. Elisabeth then snapped
back and said, “Don’t call me a coward!” The
two then went into a shouting match on camera and in front of
their audience and fellow co-hosts, who just sat there with jaws
dropped. Elisabeth said she is not to people taking Rosie's words
out of context and to own up to any “insinuations.”
Rosie then said, “Right, but every time I defend them, it’s
‘poor little Elisabeth’ that I’m picking on.”
During the shouting match, co-host Joy Behar said, “Who
is directing this show? Commercial!” After that incident,
Rosie was supposed to finish out her contract for the rest of
season but she never came back. Elisabeth said in later interviews
that she talked to Rosie several times since, but wasn’t
sure if their friendship was still okay. But Rosie said in her
blog that she only talked to Elisabeth once, and that she didn’t
think they would be friends again. |
